Staten Island Wonderland

Photograph courtesy of Forgotten NY

Forgotten NY features fantastic tours of little-known New York City neighborhoods. Our friend Kevin Walsh, at Forgotten NY, has another Staten Island post up on his site. This time he is featuring Hamilton Park. Click "HERE" for the article and pictures.

Did you know that we found Staten Island through his site? I had never been to Staten Island before I read about it on Forgotten NY about three years ago. We almost bought a building we saw on his site, in Vinegar Hill, but the foundation was badly eaten by termites. So, we methodically visited every Forgotten NY neighborhood before deciding that St. George was the one for us.

The Prodigal Borough was almost named The Forgotten Borough (if you type in www.forgottenborough.com you arrive at our site) but we decided that the name was too similar to Kevin's site name. But you never know, we might still use it someday or maybe we should share it and make a page that features all of Kevin's Staten Island Forgotten NY tours. Get busy Kevin! Kevin grew up on Staten Island. Buy Kevin's book, Forgotten NY "HERE. "

  1. Cynthia: only sites like yours (and mine) present SI as it should be presented, not as barracks for Manhattan workers or the collection of dumps and strip malls of popular fancy. In many ways it is the most beautiful borough...

  2. I dare you or any white person to walk that area at night. It was once a beautiful area but take a look at who lives in those houses now. When you see private homes under 350 grand you know what lives in a certain neighborhood. Let's not forget that a woman was brutally raped a few years ago in that very area. I know that the goal of this blog is to promote the North Shore but a lot of the north shore is still dangerous and undeveloped for a reason. Try and find a decent supermarket in that area. Send your kids to school around there and watch them get picked on or attacked. If you are a responsible blog you need to address real issues, not just your ability to buy a huge house with your trust funds.

  4. We value opinions otherwise we'd delete posts. We love Staten Island but I suppose it is not for everyone. Crime is everywhere but one reason we chose Staten Island was it seemed safe. Staten Island has less crime than the other boroughs. The North Shore is primarily democrats. I'm not here to offer news about crime or demographics but a diverse neighborhood is a healthy neighborhood. My neighborhood is white, black, Mexican, Spanish, Liberian, and a zillion others. Our blog is a forum to talk about things we like: architecture, houses, art, improvements, etc. I like to post about unique architecture which is available to those who are interested in it. I really do not think that this site is read by people with trust funds and I'm sad to say that I'm without one myself.
