Downtown Drive-In Movies

For the past four years, the Downtown Staten Island Council (DSIC) has hosted its annual community event The Downtown Drive-In Movies. Beginning May 2, 2008, and running for four consecutive weekends, the "Downtown Drive-In Movies" will be held in the parking lot of the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, and will feature a selection of nine of the most popular movies in American cinematic history.

The intent of the Downtown Staten Island Drive-In Movies is to create an event the whole family can enjoy, while simultaneously exposing islanders and off-islanders to the downtown Staten Island area. Ticket prices are kept at a modest amount of $25 per car to encourage families and couples to spend a night out without worrying about the affordability. In 2007, The Downtown Drive-In Movies was a huge success, drawing over 7,500 attendees.

National Grid, (formerly known as KeySpan Energy Services) and NYS Senator Diane Savino are the event's title sponsors. Councilman Domenic Recchia, Assemblyman Matt Titone, Bay Harbor Motors and Muss Development are also major participating sponsors for the event.

"While our event is primarily seen as entertainment, The Downtown Drive-In Movies seeks to change the perceptions of our district and highlight our community's uniqueness" explains DSIC's executive director, Kamillah Hanks. "It gives our local businesses an opportunity to benefit from the high volume of people that come down to the area to attend our event. The younger generation are used to the multiplex, digital sound and stadium seating, but you still get the folks who love drive-in experience!" Hanks said.

  1. $25 a car... not exactly super affordable for a date night. A bit better for a family than a night at the theater, but still....

  2. $25 for movies that anyone can rent at Blockbuster. Talk about a rip off! Drive Ins are supposed to be on grass, not a paved parking lot overlooking projects.

  3. The Drive-Ins that I have known have all been in paved parking lots. There are no projects near this one. What are you talking about? The last four posts seem to be from the same bitter person. Chill. This is a nice family outing. A Drive-In is much better than a blockbuster rental at home. I remember my first Drive-In as a child. It was The Poseiden Adventure. I was very young. Maybe only 5. It was so thrilling to see the film at the Drive-In. I will never forget it. I was a bit young for the film and my parents probably thought I'd sleep through it but I was rapt. I also loved getting popcorn and attaching the microphone to the car. A Drive-In is a special event. If you feel that giving your child a Blockbuster film at home is the same thing you are wrong.

  4. There's no projects along Richmond Terrace and right behind it. You can see them all from the lot? Do you even know your surroundings?

Drive Ins on paved lots? Do you get out much? There was a drive in right here on Staten Island. It was in a grass field. There's at least 2 drive ins in upstate New York within 90 minutes from here, both on grass fields. The majority are on grass. Still $25 is too much for a carload. Very greedy.

  5. If you hate it so much why don't you move away? It must not be THAT expensive because it was sold out the other night. It's great that they are doing this for the community. We need more positive people here like the Prodigal Borough people. There are plenty of people who are complainers. Do you want a website heralding all that is bad about Staten Island? What is your point?
